The ancient city of Teos stands on the hills overlooking the Aegean landscape in the Seferihisar district of İzmir. Founded by the Ionian civilization from Phocaea, this necropolis sheltered the dead of Aegean civilizations for centuries. Rows of stone structures, ceramics, and inscriptions tell of the rich cultural heritage of the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Teos was famous in antiquity as a center of the wine trade and the cult of Dionysus; this wealth is reflected in the splendor of its tombs. The successive transitions of the Phrygian, Lydian, Hellenistic, and Roman periods present the layered history of Anatolian civilizations. The findings uncovered here illuminate the ways of life, commercial connections, and beliefs about the afterlife of the people of that era. To visit, you should tour the site in the early morning hours accompanied by an archaeological guide.
