The Doric Rock Tomb is an important Lycian monument carved into the rock near the town of Kaş. With a history reaching back to the 4th century BC, the ancient Lycian civilization gave concrete form to its deep belief in the afterlife through structures such as this. On the smoothly worked rock façade of the tomb, the rectangular entrance opening, the decorative niches to the side, and the hollows of the sarcophagus beds in the inner chamber can all be clearly seen. Its simple but striking design is a mark of a permanent resting place that only wealthy families of high social status could afford. The most interesting aspect of this structure is its location, closely tied to the ancient maritime trade networks. The families here may have been important merchants who established commercial ties with Phoenicia and Egypt. At the same time, these tombs carry the traces of a rich civilization where the Greek and Persian cultures of Lycia met. When visiting, choose the midday hours; under the sunlight you can best experience the fine details of the stonework and the atmosphere of the interior.
