Story
Carved into the steep, sea-facing slopes of Kaş, the Antiphellos Rock Tombs are an immortal legacy of the ancient Lycian civilization. Around 400 BC, Antiphellos was one of Lycia's most important harbors, and here it laid its noble families to eternal rest in these rock-cut houses. Opening into the stone face as chambers with doorways, the tombs are adorned inside with sculptures and inscriptions, bearing witness to the Lycian belief system, which held that life continued after death. In Lycian culture there was a deep belief in life after death, and for this reason enormous importance was given to tombs—every inscription, every piece of stonework was an effort to make a name live on forever. Painted gold at sunset, these rock tombs have continued to watch over the cultural crossroads from beyond the clear waters of the Mediterranean for two thousand years. During your visit you should set out early in the morning, so that you can take the best photographs in the hours when the sun's rays illuminate the tombs most beautifully.
