Story

In the courtyard of Yeni Mosque, located in the heart of the Fatih district, a magnificent fountain awaits. Built in the 17th century, this structure is an important example of the mastery of Ottoman architecture in the use of water. The octagonal marble fountain is both functional and aesthetic; those stepping into the mosque courtyard fulfilled the tradition of purifying their bodies and souls by performing ablutions here. The Arabic inscriptions at the head of the fountain reflect the skill of Ottoman artists in uniting religious expressions with fine art. Its original marble cladding and geometric design are so perfect that they remain admirable even five centuries later. A visiting tip: if you arrive in the early morning hours, you can watch the sunlight playing on the fountain's marble and enjoy a calmer, more historic experience away from the tourist crowds.
