Story
The heart of Beyoglu, Istiklal Avenue is the symbolic place where, with the Tanzimat reforms of the 19th century, European influence entered Ottoman lands. Although it was originally known as Pera Avenue, the name it took after the Republic tells the story of the journey of independence and modernization. The thirty-meter facades lined along the narrow streets hold an architectural richness ranging from earlier eras to Art Deco designs. Still lively and crowded with people today, this avenue, with its theaters, arcades, cafes, and shops, creates the cultural atmosphere of the city. An interesting detail: the nostalgic red tram, in operation since 1911, carries the avenue's historic spirit into the present day, and thanks to its proximity to the Galata Tower and its evening art events, this place has become an open-air museum of Istanbul as it has changed from Ottoman times to today. A visiting tip: go for an evening walk, breathe in the aromas of Cicek Pasaji (the Flower Passage) and the Fish Market, and listen to the music of the street performers.
