Located within the İlkadım district of Samsun, the Baruthane Tumuli are silent witnesses to Anatolia's ancient past. These burial mounds span a broad period of time reaching from the Hittite era to the Hellenistic age. The proximity of their geographic position to one of the important routes of Black Sea trade shows how strategic the region has been throughout history. The pottery fragments uncovered in archaeological excavations on the mounds prove that the societies of thousands of years ago possessed a sophisticated culture of living. The damaged structural remains surrounding the summit show that different civilizations lived one after another on these lands and reshaped the place. Architectural elements from various periods present themselves as physical evidence of a layered history. If you make your visit with local guides knowledgeable in archaeology, you will be able to make sense of the hidden stories of these silent hills from a far richer perspective.
