Editor's Note
Ayasuluk Hill is an ancient mound in the Selçuk district of İzmir Province, forming part of the Ephesus UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to a Byzantine fortress and the ruins of the Basilica of St John, and is traditionally held to be the tomb of John the Apostle. Excavations have shown it to be one of the earliest settlements of Ephesus and the likely site of Apasas, capital of the Arzawa-Mira kingdom in the Hittite period. After ancient Ephesus declined from the 7th century, settlement returned to the hill; it was taken by the Turks in 1330 and served as the capital of the Aydınid beylik.
