Editor's Note
Çukuriçi Höyük is a settlement mound in southern İzmir, about 1 km south of the town of Selçuk and just southeast of ancient Ephesus. Lying beside the Derbent stream, the site is thought to have stood on the seashore in the 3rd millennium BC, a conclusion supported both by geomorphological surveys and by the many seashells found in the excavations. The mound still sits within an exceptionally fertile plain today.
