Editor's Note
Issus was an important ancient settlement on the coastal plain along the small Pinarus river, north of Iskenderun in northeastern Hatay, identified with Kinet Hoyuk near Dortyol. It is famous as the site of three decisive battles: the Battle of Issus of 333 BC, where Alexander the Great defeated Darius III of Persia; the battle of AD 194; and the battle of AD 622, in which the Byzantine emperor Heraclius defeated the Sassanids.
