Editor's Note
Cenchreae (or Kenchreai) was a city of the ancient Troad. According to Stephanus of Byzantium, Homer is said to have lived here for a time while inquiring about trees, and another tradition even made it his birthplace. The city survived under the Roman Empire into the late Middle Ages. In the early 14th century it filled with refugees from Mysia, chiefly from Scamandrus, fleeing Turkish raiders invading Western Anatolia; the Turks eventually blockaded the city, sacked it, killed most of its inhabitants and burned it down. Its site is located near modern Kayalı Dağ.
