Hidden within the historic fabric of Vize, the Hisartepe Cistern is, with this structure surviving from the Byzantine period, a witness to the region's ancient water management system. The deep, enclosed cistern, executed in fine stonework, has preserved its existence despite the passage of time, and this historic monument, located near Vize Castle, commands the city from its hilltop. Existing on this land for over a thousand years, the cistern carries to the present the traces of Hisartepe, one of Vize's old settlement centers, that is, the old castle hill. When you set out to explore the region's cultural heritage, if you make your way through the streets of the old town to reach the cistern on the hill, you can both encounter the historic monument and take in the wide panoramic view around Vize, watching the plains of Thrace that stretch westward toward Istanbul.
