Editor's Note
The site of the Greek landing at İzmir (Smyrna). Beginning on 15 May 1919 and sanctioned by British Prime Minister Lloyd George, the operation was supported by Allied warships in the harbour. The violence that erupted during the landing began the three-year Greek occupation of Smyrna and was a major spark for the Greco-Turkish War.
