İzmir marks the start of the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922, the Western Front of the Turkish War of Independence, fought between Greece and the Turkish National Movement. The conflict began when Greek forces landed at Smyrna (İzmir) on 15 May 1919 and advanced to occupy much of western and northwestern Anatolia.
