This site marks the starting point of the Turkish War of Independence (15 May 1919 - 24 July 1923). Led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the Turkish National Movement waged a military and revolutionary struggle against the occupied and partitioned Ottoman Empire after World War I, a process that ended the Ottoman sultanate and led to the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1923.
