Editor's Note

The Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Atatürk Monument stands at the Third TBMM Building in Ankara. The idea arose from the competition for the new assembly building, and a two-stage competition held in 1979-1980 was won by the sculptor Hüseyin Gezer and the architect İmran Gezer; the monument was unveiled on 19 May 1981. At its centre is Atatürk in civilian dress, flanked by a male figure holding a flag for independence and a female figure holding a torch for freedom. Made of bronze, the monument is about 5 metres tall.
