Story
In the ancient surroundings of Kas, this cistern offers a unique example of the water architecture of the Lycian civilization, preserved from the 5th century BC to the present day. This structure, which determined the quality of life in the ancient city, was built in a rectangular form and reinforced with thick stone blocks. Having endured for more than a thousand years, the cistern clearly demonstrates how precious a water source was in the arid Mediterranean climate. Located near the island-ringed harbor of Kas, it formed part of the ancient city's core infrastructure alongside its theaters and temples. An interesting detail is that underground water reservoirs were not merely functional but also a sign of the advanced engineering technology of the Hellenistic period. Walking through the cool stone corridors of the cistern, visitors can clearly experience this ingenious design of the ancient architects and, especially in the summer months, appreciate the natural coolness the underground provides.
