Editor's Note
Bekirağa Bölüğü, officially the Istanbul Guard House (İstanbul Muhafız Dairesi), is a building designed by the architect Gaspare Fossati in 1841 and used as a prison. It is significant as the first building the Tanzimat administrators commissioned from an academically trained architect. During the Ottoman period it served as a prison first within the office of the Serasker and later within the Ministry of War.
