Editor's Note
The İstanbul Hotel was built on the site of the Büyük Hüseyin Efendi Madrasa and has not survived to the present day. One of the symbolic examples of the transition from the traditional city han to the Western-style hotel, the building housed two shops and a coffeehouse on its ground floor and guest rooms on its two upper floors. The İstanbul Hotel was among the city's most luxurious lodging establishments until the 1960s.
