This monument commemorates Mimar Sinan, the chief Ottoman architect. Serving as chief architect, engineer and mathematician under sultans Suleiman the Magnificent, Selim II and Murad III, Sinan oversaw the construction of more than 300 major structures, including the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne and the Kanuni Sultan Suleiman Bridge at Büyükçekmece.
