Editor's Note
A rare surviving example of Early Republican architecture, this two-storey villa takes its name from its owner, Abdülhalik Renda. An Ottoman bureaucrat, Renda served as a provincial governor and undersecretary before being exiled to Malta by the British in 1919, after the First World War. On 19 September 1922 he became the first governor of İzmir, on behalf of the new Republic of Turkey, after the city was liberated from enemy occupation.
