Set among the white travertines of Pamukkale, beside the ancient city of Hierapolis, Pluto's Gate is one of Anatolia's most mystical archaeological sites. This ruin, built around the mouth of a cave, was regarded in Ancient Greek and Roman times as the gateway to the underworld. The toxic carbon dioxide rising from underground led people of antiquity to witness the mysterious deaths of sacrificial animals, reinforcing the belief that this was the Gate of Hades. Among the toppled column capitals and temple ruins, you can trace the complementary marks of both Hellenic and Roman architectural traditions. Interestingly, excavations in 2019 proved that the site had been formally established as a religious center during the Roman period and that various rituals were performed here. Those who wish to touch the spiritual world of antiquity should visit, especially in the early morning, together with the surrounding ancient city of Hierapolis and the travertines of Pamukkale.
