Located in central Zonguldak, the Varagel Tunnel is one of the recorded pages of the region's industrial history. Cut into the rock with the rapid surge of the coal age, this tunnel stands as a document built over nearly a hundred and fifty years by the sweat of workers' brows. Walking through its narrow, dark corridors, you can see on the slightly rough surface of the stone walls the marks of the workers' hammers, and even their names and dates inscribed there; time itself is written on these walls. The inside of the tunnel is cold, damp, and far from the light; this sensation is enough to carry you into the very midst of the effort to discover Anatolia's underground riches. The most fascinating detail of the tunnel is the personal stories of the workers hidden in the writing on the walls; names, dates, even small slogans, a human presence carved into these rock surfaces. Explore the tunnel in the morning hours and in the company of a local guide; wear a hard hat and protect yourself from the tunnel's damp.
