Story
The Sultan Selim Mosque Fountain is an important part of Konya's historic architectural fabric. Built in the Ottoman period, this ablution fountain was made to allow the faithful coming to the mosque to perform their ablutions before preparing for prayer. With its plain yet functional design, it reflects the architectural understanding of the era. The basin at the center of its octagonal structure and the surrounding stonework are among the typical examples of Ottoman ablution fountains. The soothing effect of the sound of the water was a deliberate design choice to support spiritual preparation before worship. Operating even in Konya's harsh climate, this fountain is famous for the fact that its source has never run dry—it has come to be regarded as a symbol of religious blessing. While the mosque still fulfills its function, visitors can stand beside this fountain and observe up close the functionality and aesthetic mastery of Ottoman architecture.
