Editor's Note
Halime Hatun Kümbeti is a tomb tower in the Gevaş district of Van, standing to the east of the Gevaş Historic Islamic Cemetery, the second-largest medieval Turkish-Islamic cemetery in Anatolia, and counted among the region's important landmarks. According to the inscription above its entrance, it was built in 1335 by İzzettin Şir Bey, regarded as the founder of the Hakkâri principality, for his daughter Halime Hatun; an inscription on the south window lintel names the architect as Esed, son of Pehlivan of Ahlat. Echoing the tomb towers of Ahlat in its plan, the two-storey structure consists of a twelve-sided body on a square base topped by a conical cap, built entirely of white limestone. Its most notable feature is the dense floral, geometric and calligraphic ornamentation on the exterior. The tomb was restored by the General Directorate of Foundations in 2005.
