Rising from the history-scented soil of Polatlı, the Gordion Tumulus is a witness to the brilliant era of the Phrygian Kingdom in the 8th century BC. This ancient city, the capital of the great Midas, was eventually lost beneath the earth, yet it managed to survive in the form of a gigantic mound. This cylindrical tumulus, with a height of roughly 50 meters, stands bolt upright like a giant ruling over its surroundings. As the center of historical conflicts, the passage of trade routes, and the encounter of civilizations, Gordion is one of the most important excavation sites in the science of archaeology. Its most famous find is the Gordian Knot, which Midas is said to have tied with his own hand and which no one could untie; according to legend, whoever untied this knot would become ruler of the world—until Alexander the Great cut it with his sword. When you visit, lend an ear to the surrounding archaeological remains and the silent cries of the ancient tombs; approach this place, the highest monument to the achievement of Phrygian civilization, with respect.
