Story

Overlooking the clear waters of the Sea of Marmara, the Boukoleon Palace has stood at the heart of Istanbul for fifteen centuries as one of the most magnificent residences of the Byzantine Empire. The Western Gate of this palace, preserved today within the Marmara Walls, is a striking testament to the architectural advancement of its time, formed by the masterful working of massive marble blocks. The stone columns rising on either side of the gate and the detailed reliefs have carried the magnificent character of imperial architecture down to our day. Through this ceremonial gate passed many emperors, from Constantine I to Theodosius V, and the fate of the state was determined here. The inscriptions and monograms found here by archaeologists reveal the religious and political importance of the palace. When visiting, it is recommended to walk along the Marmara Walls and also see Kumkapı, the Silivri Gate, and the nearby Vakıflar Museum; in this way it becomes possible to understand the Byzantine heritage as a whole.
