Editor's Note
Bab-i Humayun, also known as the Imperial Gate, is the main entrance of Topkapi Palace and one of its most monumental structures, opening onto the palace's outer courtyard. It was built in 1478 during the reign of Mehmed II. Also referred to in early sources as the Great Gate, the Procession Gate and the Gate of Sovereignty, it was the point where ambassadors, state officials and ceremonial processions approaching the palace were first received. As one of the defining settings of Ottoman court protocol, it played a central role both politically and architecturally.
