Editor's Note
Foça Castle, also called Beşkapılar (Five Gates) Castle, is a coastal fortification stretching along a peninsula in the Foça district of İzmir. Built in the 11th or 12th century, it was rebuilt by the Genoese in the 13th century when it formed part of the Republic of Genoa. In the 14th century the Ottoman prince Şehzade Halil was held here, and the walls were repaired by the Ottomans in 1538-1539, when towers were added.
