Lulua Castle (Loulon in Greek, Lu'lu'a in Arabic) is a medieval fortress on a rocky hill near the village of Hasangazi in the Ulukışla district of Niğde. It held strategic importance as it controlled the northern exit of the Cilician Gates and the main road linking Tyana with Tarsus. In the 8th-9th centuries it lay on the frontier between the Byzantine Empire and the Arab Caliphate and changed hands several times during the Arab-Byzantine wars. Ruins of its walls along with traces of barracks and cisterns on the hilltop date to the 9th-12th centuries. The fortress is also notable as the southernmost of a line of nine beacons that relayed messages from the frontier to Constantinople.
