Editor's Note
Kilitbahir Castle, whose name means "lock of the sea," stands on the European side of the Dardanelles, opposite the city of Çanakkale and its corresponding fortress. It was built in 1463 by Fatih Sultan Mehmet, together with the castle on the opposite shore, to control the straits at their narrowest point, and its name reflects this defensive purpose.
