Crusader-built Castle of St Peter that became Bodrum's stone heart, now housing the Underwater Archaeology Museum.
Editor's Note
Bodrum Castle, in the port town of Bodrum in Muğla Province, was built from 1402 onwards by the Knights of St John as the Castle of St. Peter. Its four towers, known as the English, French, German and Italian towers, bear the names of the nations responsible for their construction. Taken over by the Ottoman Empire in 1523, when its chapel was converted into a mosque, it remained under the empire for almost 400 years. Since the early 1960s it has housed the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, and in 2016 it was inscribed on the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.
