Story

Built upon the hills of Çatalzeytin, Ginolu Castle is a strategic structure that served as the guardian of the region for centuries. Its walls, bearing traces from the Berber, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods, lay bare the layers of history. The panoramic view that opens from the castle presents a bird's-eye sweep of the entire Kastamonu plains, making it clear why a command center was placed here in earlier times. The strong silhouette of its towers and the stonework still reflect the defensive strategies adopted against sieges. An interesting fact: inscriptions found in the castle reveal that its name in the Byzantine period was 'Ginulos' and that it was an important administrative center in the region. Visitors are advised to come in the autumn months; in that season the colors of nature and the light heighten the castle's historic beauty all the more.
