Ziyaret Tepe is an ancient settlement mound on the south bank of the Tigris, southeast of Bismil in Diyarbakır province, about 20 km west of where the Tigris meets the Batman River. Rising 22 metres above the plain, its roughly 3-hectare acropolis is one of the region's large mounds, with a 'lower town' of some 29 hectares spreading around it. In the Late Assyrian period it was the important provincial city of Tushhan; rebuilt by the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II, it survived until the end of the Neo-Assyrian state around 611 BC.
