Editor's Note
Rhodiapolis was a city in ancient Lycia, built on and around a hill northwest of the modern town of Kumluca in Antalya Province. It stands out as a successfully planned, very compact Roman city laid out on limited and difficult terrain with little empty space beyond its streets. On the sloping ground, the terraces needed for the urban fabric were formed largely by cisterns, a clever solution that met the city's water demand while also creating flat areas for building.
