Editor's Note
The Harbour of Theodosius was one of the principal ports of Byzantine Constantinople, located beneath today's Yenikapı district of Istanbul on the Sea of Marmara. Built in the late 4th century under Theodosius I at the mouth of the Lycus watercourse, it was the city's major trade point in Late Antiquity and handled grain ships from Egypt before silting up and being turned over to agriculture. Excavations for the Marmaray tunnel from 2004 onward uncovered remains spanning the Neolithic to Byzantine periods, over 30 shipwrecks, and the oldest settlement evidence in Constantinople, with artefacts dating back to around 6000 BC.
