Story
The main artery of Beyoğlu, the French Passage (Fransız Geçidi) is the most visible symbol of 19th-century Ottoman modernization. With its narrow cobbled lanes, iron-railed staircases and classical European architecture, the passage is a window onto Pera's lost cosmopolitanism. The antique shops, auctioneers and bookstores that line it preserve and present the spirit of old Istanbul. This passage was a crossing point for the Turkish literary and artistic community in the 1950s through the 1970s; figures such as Sait Faik, Metin Altıok and Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar spent time here, perhaps sowing the seeds of inspiration for their works in this very place. Every stone, every shop is a cultural bridge stretching from the Ottoman era to the Republic. Visitor suggestion: explore it in the early evening, just as the yellow lamps come on. In the antique shops, examine old Ottoman maps and archival documents, and experience these historic layers by touch.
