Körtik Tepe is a Neolithic mound near the village of Ağıl in the Bismil district of Diyarbakır, where the Batman River meets the Tigris. Settlement here began around 10,700 BC, peaked in density around 9,300 BC, and was abandoned within a short period, probably due to Holocene climate change and natural disasters such as flooding. Burials placed in the floors and around the round houses suggest the dwellings were also regarded as sacred.
