Karahöyük 1 is an ancient settlement mound about 7 km southwest of the centre of Konya. Because there are several mounds named Karahöyük within Konya, this one is referred to as Karahöyük 1. It is formed of eleven hillocks, one of them fairly large, with the settlement spreading over an area of roughly 1,000 by 500 metres. In one trench virgin soil was reached only at 29 metres, showing that the mound lies beneath a thick layer of fill.
