Editor's Note
Kerkenes is the largest pre-Hellenistic site on the Anatolian Plateau, an Iron Age city about 5 km west of Sahmuratli village, southeast of Yozgat, enclosed by some 7 km of strong stone defences pierced by seven gates that ring 2.5 km2. Likely the Pteria mentioned by Herodotus, it was sacked and burned by the Persian king Cyrus the Great just after the Battle of Pteria in 547 BC and then completely abandoned.
