Karaman's historic grain warehouses are tangible proof of the economic power and administrative mechanisms of the Ottoman era. Located in the city center, these stone buildings, with their thick walls and cool storerooms, kept the pulse of a bustling agricultural economy as time went by. From the 16th century onward, the wheat and barley grown in the region's fertile lands were, thanks to these warehouses, distributed across the country during winter months and times of drought. Plain in appearance yet flawless in function, these buildings stand out for their architectural solutions that keep the interior cool. The windows were kept small, and the entrances were designed narrow to guard against enemies. As an interesting detail, copper was placed in the small channels at the base of the warehouses to keep mice out. Moreover, thanks to Karaman's strategic location, these warehouses served as a storage hub on the caravan trade route. When you visit, you can examine the scratches and inscriptions left on the walls of the old warehouses and lend an ear to the silent stories of this place, which sheds light on Karaman's Seljuk and Ottoman eras.
