İpeklikuyu Mound, an earthen hill rising near Bornova, holds within it a single page of Anatolia's palimpsest of civilizations. The settlements founded and abandoned one after another throughout history lie waiting beneath the earth in distinct layers. Architectural remains from antiquity, stone foundations, pottery fragments, and roof tiles have helped archaeologists open a tunnel through time. What makes this mound remarkable is how clearly it reveals the traces of the eras in which various civilizations lived; people of different ages built upon the same ground, each leaving their own mark. As visitors climb to the top of the mound and take in the commanding view over the Bornova plain, they may reflect that the earth beneath their feet carries stories from thousands of years ago.
