Story
In the shadow of Diyarbakır's black city walls, tucked among the old neighborhoods of the Sur district, the Dengbêj House is a living museum of the Kurdish oral tradition. Dengbêj are cultural bearers who for centuries recounted history and legends to the people through song. This place was created to preserve the memory of that precious tradition and pass it on to future generations. As you step through its wooden doors, rooms adorned with period objects and musical instruments carry you back in time. The walls are filled with photographs and stories of old dengbêj. This is not merely a place that teaches history, it lets you feel the cultural depth of Kurdish identity. Without written records, the dengbêj held thousands of verses in their memory, representatives of a tradition older even than Homer. During evening gatherings, you can listen to a real dengbêj. Visitor tip: tour the house with a local guide, and sip tea in the garden while gazing at Sur's historic walls.
