Editor's Note
The Gültepe Necropolis lies in the Gültepe neighbourhood, about 2 km from the centre of İzmit in Kocaeli. The ancient necropolis, dated to between the 2nd and 9th centuries AD, together with a Byzantine-era sacred building, came to light during construction of the Istanbul-Ankara motorway. Excavations revealed a frescoed burial chamber, numerous hypogea, the remains of a cross-plan church and Martyrion structures built for Christian martyrs, while finds such as urns, tear bottles and mirrors were taken to the museum. The exposed area now lies neglected, and illegal digging has heavily damaged the burial chambers and church remains.
