The Acropolis of Ancyra, set on the high hills of Ankara, occupies a strategic location that humankind has favored ever since the ages when Anatolia's written history began, holding within it the architectural and cultural traces of successive civilizations such as the Hittites, the Phrygians, the Galatians, and the Romans. The thick stone foundations, the column fragments dismantled and reworked, and the ceramic debris from various periods all tell of how dynamic a center of history this area has been. The layered archaeological structure is the most concrete indication of the cultural interaction in Anatolia. An interesting point: in some of the wall ruins, stones taken from earlier structures were reused, which shows how important architectural economy was in antiquity. A visiting tip: when you reach the acropolis by walking through the narrow streets of Altındağ, the whole of Ankara opens up beneath your feet, and this view makes you instantly understand why the people of antiquity favored this place.
