The ancient city of Metropolis in Torbalı is one of Anatolia's most important archaeological centers. Founded in eastern Ionia, this city remained under the control of many civilizations, including the Lydians, the Persians, and the Greeks. The Peristyle House has survived to the present day as a living witness to this multilayered history. Peristyle houses, notable for their wide courtyards and colonnades, are a symbol of the luxury and architectural skill of antiquity. These ruins at Metropolis bear, in particular, the features of Hellenistic-period architecture. The stone column capitals and wall remains arranged around the courtyard tell of the living standards of those days. From the roof tiles and door thresholds they found here, scholars have been able to understand that these houses were of very high quality. An interesting detail is that Metropolis was rebuilt twice over the course of its history. When visiting, it is highly instructive to examine the craftsmanship of the column capitals up close and to imagine the layout of the courtyard under the early morning light.
