Editor's Note
This is the more northerly of two ancient towns named Metropolis in Phrygia, its name linked either to its role as a Phrygian royal capital or to the mother goddess Cybele. The site is associated with the ruins of Pişmiş Kalesi, which command the Yazılıkaya–Midas Valley; a rock-cut tomb here attributed to King Midas suggests the place was an important centre as early as the 8th century BC. The town persisted through the Roman period and was still mentioned by Hierocles in the 6th century AD before declining. It is today located north of the village of Oynaş in the Seyitgazi district of Eskişehir.
