Story
Veliefendi Hippodrome, the historic center of Bakırköy, is an important part of Istanbul's rich cultural heritage. Established in the Ottoman period, this expansive hippodrome is known as a prestigious venue where sultans and state dignitaries watched horse races. Bearing the name of Şehzade Veliefendi, son of Suleiman the Magnificent, this structure has survived to the present day, having been restored many times since the 16th century. Its broad field and the surrounding architectural remains are important records of Ottoman sporting culture and the urban planning of the era. The ancient ruins and historic graves around the hippodrome carry visitors back centuries. To best feel the cultural richness of the area, a stroll at sunset is recommended; at those hours the historic grounds seem to come alive under the golden light of the sun.
