Astyra, located northwest of İzmir near today's district of Dikili, is one of the oldest settlement areas in Anatolia. Founded in antiquity by the Aeolians, this city became a colony of Miletus and served for many centuries as an important trade center. The stone foundations, column fragments, and ceramic finds seen among the ruins reflect the rich architectural heritage of the Archaic and Hellenistic periods. Used over time as a settlement in the Roman and Byzantine periods as well, Astyra offers a layered history in which each civilization left its own mark on these lands. The ancient harbor structures and commercial centers stand today as silent witnesses among the wild grasses. Walking beneath the blue sky of the Aegean, one is astonished by how many civilizations' footprints remain in this small area. When you visit, take a local guide along; each of the ancient stones whispers the stories of thousands of years ago to those who listen.
