Editor's Note
Athenae (or Athenai) was one of the coastal towns of ancient Pontus, home to a harbour and a Greek temple. Its earliest recorded settlement was a trading colony founded here by Greeks from Miletus in the 8th century BC. Arrian described it as a deserted fort, while the Byzantine historian Procopius counted it among the populous places of his day. According to Procopius, the town took its name from an ancient princess of the same name whose tomb lay in the region.
