Leaving the coast of Silifke and heading inland, you come upon Diocaesarea, an ancient realm that has taken shape among stones drifted into place over the ages. One of the important trade centers of the Roman period, this settlement drew the attention of many civilizations with its rich farmland and its strategic position near the sea. Columns built in the Corinthian style, the temple ruins rising within a grove, and the broad agora all stand as witnesses to the architectural sophistication of their time. Diocaesarea, which flourished above all in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, is also famous for its rock-cut tombs - the moment ancient life ended, frozen forever in stone. Visitors to this site, set roughly 40 kilometers inland from the center of Silifke, can experience the purest form of silence as they walk the path of history at the foot of the Taurus Mountains.
